It's February 1995, what are you doing? Well Mitsubishi saw it as the right time to introduce the Evolution III to the world. It featured several improvements over the previous models. New, more aggressive styling and a new nose moulding improved the air supply to the radiator, intercooler and brakes. New side skirts and rear bumper moldings and a larger rear spoiler were added to reduce lift. The engine was improved and had a higher compression ratio than before, and a new turbocharger compressor which resulted in a power output of 270 bhp (201 kW) at 6,250 rpm and 309 N⋅m (228 lb⋅ft) of torque at 3,000 rpm.
Then in 1996, Finnish rally driver Tommi Mäkinen won the WRC Driver’s Championship with a rally-prepped Lancer Evo III. It was the first time a Mitsubishi had done so. He won again in 1997, 1998, and 1999 in the Evo III’s successors, the IV, V, and VI although those Evos were built on a different platform. The Evo III was the last model to use the original Lancer Evo’s platform and will forever remain in history as the Evo that catapulted Mitsubishi into the WRC record books.
Let's also not forget that the Lancer Evo III also has a few more claims to fame. Jackie Chan drove one in the film Thunderbolt, previewing the Fast and Furious scene by several years. The US enthusiast community was introduced to the Lancer Evo III, and JDM cars in general, via the original Gran Turismo. It also made a big appearance in the Initial D anime. If you'e a Mitsubishi fan there's no denying you need an Evo III in your collection!
