They say you cant 'hear' pictures, but we swear we can hear the sweet sound of Mazda's quad rotor engine just by looking at these photos! Mazda's rotary engine sometimes cops flak for needing to be rebuilt more than it's piston powered counterparts but let's not forget the reliability of the rotary was more than proven in 1991 when a 787B driven by Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler, and Bertrand Gachot went on to victory in the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The winning No. 55 Mazda 787B had an outrageous bright orange and green livery in honor of its main sponsor, Renown, a Japanese clothing manufacturer that had been supporting the team since 1988 by providing all their clothing for the events.
Mazda was not the favorite to win with the No. 55 Mazda starting in 19th, despite being the 12th fastest qualifier. On the day before the race, the team manager decided to drop his usual conservative strategy and instructed the drivers of the No. 55 car to drive as if it were a short sprint race. The strategy paid off and Mazda's historical win became the first victory by a Japanese manufacturer, and the only such victory for 27 years until Toyota won the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans.
